This is the World's first Walkthrough on how to install Puppy Linux on the VAIO GT-1

VAIO PCG-GT1 Puppy Linux install Walkthrough
(without extrenal media booting, without requiring disk partitionning)

IF NO WAY TO BOOT FROM AN EXTERNAL DRIVE, DON'T WORRY
- machine seems to early to boot from USB
- used to boot from firewire CD-RW but I didn't have the peripherical at hand.

FORTUNATELY THERE'S ANOTHER METHOD: INSTALL PUPPY THROUGH LICK

I. Install LICK

LICK is a Puppy Linux installer for Windows. It configures Windows and Puppy Linux to create a dual-boot environment in just a few clicks.

If, like me you succeded to install Windows XP on your GT-1, or even with ME that should do:
https://github.com/noryb009/lick/releases/tag/v1.3.3

II. LICK configures any Puppy .iso for booting on it through grub4dos (auto-installed by LICK)

NOTE: you need a puppy iso that is non pae, which means the kernel is configured to be non pae.

For more info, have a look at the thread in the Puppy Linux forums:
https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=791&sid=124a851db1a63fd16ae943f0d81c6abc

IMPORTANT: in order for Lick to work, you have to insure your windows boot.ini is not read-only. (the procedure to fix that is easy to find).

Procedure is as follows:
open the c drive folder and..
1. Go to tools @ top
2. folder options
3.view
4.show hidden files
5. unchek "hide protected operating system files (THIS STEP)
6. look in c: and look for boot.ini
7.right click go to props.
8. uncheck Read only

Now you can run Lick and follow the procedure:
Main menu:
  1) Install ISO or from CD
  2) Entry submenu (view/delete)
  3) Install/uninstall boot loader
  4) Quit
  Choice:
1<enter>
  ISO file or CD drive:
C:/xenialpup64-7.5-uefi.iso<enter>
  Install to drive:
  1) C:/
  2) D:/
1<enter>
  Enter ID [xenialpup64-7.5-uefi]:
<enter>
  Enter Name [xenialpup64 7.5 uefi]:
<enter>

For as many different iso's you want to try, follow these instructions:

Ordre (Installation d'un nouvel .iso en LICK)
1. reinstall with new iso image (re-run Lick)
(2 and 3 are only needed to be done once if your system's boot.ini is located into another drive - me in the first partition, h: drive, check with a partitionning software that is compatible with your windows version)
2. edit boot.ini de H:/ (always make a  boot.bak backup and be extra careful) adding the last line LICK added to the C:/ boot.ini file
3. copy pupldr file from C:/ to H:/

From there on you can test as many ISO's as your chosen drive free space allows:
is working: here what I tested on the VAIO
wary5.5 very slow, windows wave on and off
poenix4.31 fluid, my choice / network activates nicely / seamonkey crashes
fluppy0.13bare fails to load swap partition / doesn't get it on video settings / network doesn't activate properly
puppy4.31 fluidest / seamonkey crashes too
There won't be camera or microphone native support, for this you will either have to wait that his project matures or that you develop it yourself ;)

When you startup Puppy you have to answer a few questions for system configuration

Here is some help in order to do so successfully for your Vaio GT-1

Choose the standard/advised answers except for display settings chose 1024x768 LCD and then 1024x768x24

When you exit puppy it will be asked if you want to save your session for next time, be sure to choose a drive where you have backed up the data before, and possibly a free dedicated partition.

Thanks to all the wonderful folks at Puppy Linux Forums, Facebook Linux for Older Computer's group and Lick's author that made this wonder possible! A world's first!

Enjoy!
